As you all know, I'm back at uni this year, and I must say a lot has happened on campus in terms of "greening" since I was first there back in the Dark Ages, when history was contemporary studies.
There were no recycle bins when I was last there, for a start.
ALL bins around campus now have recycle bins next to them, which is a good thing, but I still see thousands and thousands of paper cups, plastic lids and plastic spoons or little wooden sticks being thrown out. Of course I take my re-usable cup (it has a lid, which is handy for coffee not ending up all over your bag, notes, laptop etc, and it's not actually the one I've linked to, but is similar) but the first week I still ended up using a couple of sticks - I figure they're less evil than plastic spoons, marginally, because at least they break down, and I needed to stir! (I often stir, but not always with a stick!)
And then, while idly perusing the camping store on Elizabeth St*, more-or-less next to JB Hi-Fi, I discovered this wild utensil. It's a fork, knife and spoon in one super-tough plastic utensil. It's already saved me several disposable plastic utensils and now has a permanent home in my handbag. I LOVE it. Camping shop dude assured me that they're made of really strong stuff and won't snap in my bag even if they collide with heavy books about Popes and the other assorted
Now all I need is a solar panel backpack so I can charge my iPod as I walk around campus.
*some women shop for shoes. I have a travel accessories fetish. Did you know you can get a tent that pops out of a jacket? I srsly want one, and I don't even go camping.
